Recycled motor oil, in your car.
Valvoline recently introduced their NextGen line of motor oil that is made from 50% recycled oil, and its still 100% recyclable. This re-refined oil requires less energy to manufacture, reduces crude oil demand, and contains less pollutants than normal motor oil. I've been recycling my used motor oil for years and never knew where it went. Its good to see recycled and be used again for what it was manufactured for.

ECOR
This is a new material technology that is pure, sustainable, and green. It made from water, fiber, heat, and pressure. There is NO formaldehyde, chemicals, petroleum, and no toxic additives whatsoever. We can make it out of any fiber, mostly from recycled paper, card board, and even cow pies.
It starts with a corrugated panel. We can make curves, spirals, honey combs out of this panel to create highly engineered products. Anything you would make out of wood you can make with Ecor!

graffiti that is clean, green, and legal
These two guys are putting their mark on the walls of Germany without resistance from citizens or authorities. They use stencils and a system called "reverse graffiti," where they actually clean scummy walls to create their pictures. The pair depict green, environmentally conscious vehicles in all of their works.

Make it new again
In our efforts to make meaningful objects, we sometimes forget that the old objects we have around us can be made meaningful and useful again. If something still works well, why get rid of it? Maybe get some new handles for that old dresser or some new legs for that old chair. Breathe new life into old things for a change.....
Converting plastic back into oil
A company in Japan has managed to revert plastic into oil. The article also goes into detail how they are going about changing people's view of plastic; rather than viewing it as garbage, people will see it as oil and therefore valuable. There is also a video that goes along with the article.
Where do plastics come from???
Here is a website that does a good job of breaking down the life cycle of plastic from the crude oil it's made of up to the component production phase. The website provides some other information on specific things concerning plastics and sustainability related topics as well. (hint: this site is a good place to look for links for this blog)

EATware's claim to no emissions
The company EATware claims that they have no emissions in their manufacturing... I wonder, are all their machines and vehicles running on solar energy? I agree with and support the companies idea but in reality creating any product makes emissions. Never hurts to try for less though :)

Emergency Beds
The bed's can be made from any standard cardboard. The design shows how to put the cardboard strips together effectively. It's a good solution for emergencies, especially since it uses a common material. Cardboard is great because it can withstand weight and can be recycled. My grandpa made me a bed out of banana boxes in 8th grade, I slept on it for a year and it was way more comfortable than many mattresses. I think this is a great idea with lots of longevity.

ZIPPO lighter
This could be a real surprise to everyone but zippo lighters are actually very sustainable. Usually made of metal, scraps can be melted down and reused. Zippo's have a very long life. The company was founded in 1932 and became popular in WWII because of its durability. Today, those original lighters can still spark and ignite. When's the last time you heard of anyone throwing away a zippo lighter?
A better use of recycled glass
For those of you that recycle their plastic bottles and aluminum cans, you know that a nice return will come back. But when you try to recycle glass bottles, they become a hassle. Most recycling centers recqure you to seperate the colors with the clears. All this hassle for a small return. Reason be is that recycling glass bottles to make new bottles is a harder process than it seems. Instead of recycling them into new bottles, a scientist in the UK has discovered a way to turn ground up glass into a special compound called "tobermorite" which sucks up toxic materials from groundwater. This is a more practical way to recycle bottles since colors would not matter.

Water-Energy Nexus... How Energy Drains Water Supplies
Though this article is not particularly related to product design it gives good insight on what we are not doing as a society to preserve water and the linkages to energy and our daily lives. This could be done in product design on a smaller scale I would think?
Too Slow Too Long

Secret Life of paper
While i was working on the product life cycle i came across to this website. Lot of useful information and interesting videos Here's the website http://www.secret-life.org/paper/, check it out.
wondering how products are made?
as i was looking around to find how pencils are made, i ran into a website that is dedicated to such search:
how products are made
this website is not complex, but it does give a rough idea of how some products are made, what materials are needed to make the products, and where do the materials come from. it also tells the reader what the process is to make a certain product.
although this might not get too detailed with the products, it does help narrow down the search if one is not certain where to start to find out what material is used in certain products.

make water work harder for you.
Here is a pretty cool idea on sharing water for a sink and toilet. I know, sounds gross, right? The product is called the AQUS water reclamation system by Sloan. The water used to wash your hands goes through a "cleaning" unit that sends the water to the neighboring toilet. From there, the water finally makes it's departure out of the household, after cleaning both hands and toilet. The unit is sold commercially and is told to take about an hour for installation. It's not bad of a gig considering it replaces 65% of the potable water normally used in toilets with grey water that was on its way out anyways.
Flat Pack Outdoor Products
Here is a really cool outdoor product collection done by Shift_Design of Philadelphia. All of the products are manufactured with 20% recycled stainless steel and has a 100% recyclable end of product life. All of the products support low- to no-energy consumption lifestyle like their rain collectors, which can be hooked up to a lawn sprinkler system when the weather goes through a temporary dry-spell.
